Buddhas Hand

This photograph was taken at a Japanese market but the produce is sold by Chinese. I found it unusual fruit(?). I am not quite sure what it is, it belongs to the citrus family. It looks like lemon with fingers. The Chinese called it Buddhas hand. I was going to buy it but the price was too much for just trying. $10.00 for five-six fingers is pretty expensive.

Sub pages

Dear visitor loyalties,
I have a few announcement to report. I created sub-pages for:

Khmer Bistro
-Herbs and Spices
-Fruits and Vegetables

Music: song

-music videos

The reason behind it is that by putting too many images or videos on the same page, it gets very heavy. I noticed some of my viewers have dial-up internet connection. This can cause lots frustration to view the page, it can be very slow.  My apologies!

*Satrey Khmer Online is over four months old, I am still working on my site. Occasionally, you may see changes in layout, themes, words editing after each post.  Pardon me for the inconvenient. IT is a ballpark, I am still learning and developing my site.

Your input is important, I would greatly appreciate any advice or ideas.

Thank you very much!

Respectfully,

"Proud to Be Khmer" Inscription

KhmernokoreajstoneinscriptionCambodian ancient stone inscription under the reign of HM King Udayaditiyavarman II  “Udaya Aditiya = the Rising Sun” (circa A.D 11th century), found at an ancient Khmer temple in Nokor Reachak Seima “Nakhon Ratchasima, present-day Thailand.”

The inscription said “If I will be rewarded for my meritorious acts, I wish to be reborn in Kampuja  [again].”
If one studies the culture and tradition of Khmer people in depth, one will understand why Khmer people those days were very proud race and “loved their nation.”  It is a history of an ancient extravaganza. The culture that spread throughout Thailand, Laos and most southeast Asia.

Amazing Khmer Artist

KhmerwomanMr. Khem Chantha, a Khmer artist who won first prize in the Cambodia National Artist contest in 2000. Mr. Khem Chantha art work depicts the beauty and the darkness of Cambodia’s daily life. His skill is a masterpiece! I’ve never seen anything like this, his arts look so real. I used to learn about world art when I was in college, I can say he’s better than Monet, Pablo, Vincent van Gogh… they cannot beat Mr. Khem Chantha’s talent! As soon as I saw his paintings, I am deeply in love with them. I cannot help looking at them over and over again…. breathless and priceless. It seriously gives me goose bump. All I can say is…. WOW!  How did he do that?  Some people are born with special talent indeed.  I’d like readers to visit his site to see why I am confident to say that his works exceed some of the western artists.

Wedding Dance

“The original wedding dance performed by Khmer Krom dancers from the Mekong Delta.”

Brief hisotry of Khmer Krom:  Khmer Krom are Cambodian from lower Cambodia or southern Cambodia. They have been inhibiting in this territory since the first century, they are also known as Khmer Nokor Phnom or Funan(in Chinese pronunciation). This part of Cambodia was invaded and illegally transferred and later became “south Vietnam” on June, 1949. This capital city of lower Cambodia was Preynokor. Prey means forest, Nokor means great, huge and luxurious. Preynokor, the great huge luxurious forest. Preynokor city was Cambodia’s center of economic and trade. Merchants around the globe such as  Arabs, China, India came to buy/sell and exchange goods. The Vietnamese confiscated Cambodia’s most important city and renamed to Saigon or Ho Chi Minh city. According to Khmer Krom source, currently there are more than 8 million Cambodian living in “present-day Vietnam.” Almost the size of midland Cambodia. Under the communist authority, south Cambodian have been living under suppression and oppression. All Cambodian must change their names to Vietnamese, all Cambodian signs must be bulldozed and rebuild with new signs in Vietnamese language, temples and the monks community are being monitored by Vietnamese government.

The Democratic Candidate Debate

hillbom

I spent my whole evening watching presidential debate between senator Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton in Ohio. The greatest presidential debate I’ve ever lived through my life. And it IS a record that never a woman nor strong African American candidate in the American history. This is an eye opening. The two were very intellectual and civil people. What was very interesting is how they handled some tough hypothetical questions and how each take criticism. This what I want to see in Cambodia. I’ve learned about professionalism and I truly think this is how leaders should be for the role model of the countries. NOT about power, angers and intimidation. In this sense, “Cambodia’s” current government leaders are very primitive and uncivilized.

Being a president is a  very tough position, one would have to be able to handle issue on all level and about anything both national and international, know how to be ready on tough issue which can be beyond comprehension. I like both candidates and I have great respect for the two, Hillary came from a very strong background years of experience in the office and has traveled to eighty countries, amazing lady! The woman whom I have always admired. There are some part which I disagree with her during the debate where she accused Obama on plagiarism to boost the votes, that was very very low-cheap approach, it changed a slight image of her. Obama  clashed Clinton over the war in Iraq,  Health Care and NAFTA which Hillary and her husband voted  and I am not too crazy about their support.

Language Of Love

Pheasa Snaeha, Language Of Love by Yok Teth Rotha (post by khmrch1cc)

What is love? Why love hurts?  Is there such thing as true love? These are question that I kept asking myself.  Sure enough, the answer varies according to each individual. No one can answer it precisely and you will find the answers when time comes. But in all, I do believe in true love. True love co-exist by two NOT one. When both hearts joined voluntarily nothing can take away the love. It only grow stronger.  Love someone who loves you, not be with someone who you feel pity for because in the end this is not your true heart. Is love base on destiny? From my view, I’d like to believe that love is who you choose to be with and how you grow it, not by faith or time to allow you where it should start or end. Love DOES take time, one needs to know the person’s background. If you fall in love with love, then there will be many obstacles because it’s too soon. Ms. Yok Teth Rotha tells you in her song. A song of her true love. Love cannot change her heart.

Concern Over Cambodian Ancient Ruins

Study of Angkor’s demise provides a warning
By destroying forest, inhabitants of Cambodia’s city lit ecological time bomb.080215-angkor-cambodia-hmed-4a_hmedium

SIEM REAP, Cambodia – By destroying vast tracts of forest to enlarge their farm land, inhabitants of the wondrous city of Angkor lit the fuse to an ecological time bomb that spelled doom for what was once the world’s largest urban area. So believe archaeologists engaged in groundbreaking research into the ancient civilization of Angkor. And they are warning that history could repeat itself through reckless, headlong pursuit of dollars from tourists flocking to see Angkor’s fabled monuments.

“It’s just a weird cycle. It seems like Angkor is self-repeating itself,” said Mitch Hendrickson, who recently led an excavation as part of research into Angkor as a human settlement. Conservationists have long expressed concerns about the state of the monuments, especially the stress from the tourist invasion. They also say the uncontrolled pumping of underground water to meet rising demand of hotels, guesthouses and residents in the adjoining town of Siem Reap may be destabilizing the earth beneath the centuries-old temples so much that they might sink and collapse.

Prasat Phum Pon

phumponmapPrasat Phum Pon is the oldest Khmer temple located in Sangkha  district Surin(Isaan), “present-day Thailand.”  This sanctuary was built around 5th-6th A.D. during the period of Khmer Chenla and Khmer Nokor Phnom, Funan. Prasat Phum Pom consists of 4 structures, three bricks and one laterite facing North and South direction. The northern complex is still in good condition. There are remaining complex base and one stands the 32 meters beyond in the west part. The laterite based with sandstone door frame, lintel and colonnettes. Gorgeous as it is, this 1,600 years old still erecting proudly stands for her Khmer ancestor’s pride until today.

phumponKhmerIsaan is highly  populated with Khmer residents who have been inhabiting  in Surin before Thai invasion. After Thai invaded and took full control over western part of Cambodia, the Thai authorities abandoned Khmer from practice basic right, the right to speak the native tongue.  Khmer language was forbidden by the Thai government from being taught or spoken within the Khmer community. ” It’s part of the Thai government’s “nation-building” project: they try to minimize their “ethnic minority” citizens which share a culture with border nations (Khmers, Laos) from establishing too strong of a solidarity with their sisters and brothers across the borders,” mainland Cambodia.(-quote by FS).

Cambodia – 1920’s Khmer in Color

Part I

“See some of the most rare footages and photographs in color of Cambodia in the 1920’s. Cambodia was a beautiful and colorful nation to be seen by the Europeans. Ang Choulean a popular Fine Arts teacher at the Phnom Penh University who wrote and published many books in trying to keep Khmer beautiful Arts and Culture alive.
“At the sight of this temple, one feels one’s spirit crushed, one’s imagination surpassed. One looks, one admires, and, seized with respect, one is silent. For where are the words to praise a work of art that may not have its equal anywhere on the globe? … What genius this Michalangelo of the East had, that he was capable of concaving such a work.” He said: “See Angkor and Die.” Henri Mouhot

Part II

“See royal dance troupe and their famous trip to France. Art and dance of the Khmer tradition at it best and colorful displace of beauty. Princess Buppha Devi a famous beautiful dancer of her time. “They were the masters of their world. It was quite wonderful. There was peace and order. Temples full of riches. Happy Brahmins full of good rice, good food. And, of course, some of the most magnificent temples ever built. Nothing in that part of the world would compare. Nothing! That’s quite something, n’est-ce pas? — isn’it?” Bernard Philippe Groslier ”

Battambong, Kampuchea

Original statue of grandfather Battambong. The color, look and style assimilate throughout Khmer arts and ruins. Most Khmer ancient statues have calm and smiley face.

New statue of grandfather Battambong. This remade one doesn’t seem to represent the heart of Khmer arts.

-I overheard the story of lok ta battambong statue years ago. The original statue was destroyed by Vietnamese installed government(CPP) after their invasion and they replaced a new statue with a black color which to depict the skin color of Khmer people. I don’t know if it’s true story but I am not surprise to hear such degrading on Khmer race, Vietnam has a history of looking down at other race…I  am not surprise at all.  If anyone have a full information about old and new statue of lok ta battambong, please share with us. I am still learning about Battambong and the statue.

Etiquette: Sleep, Walk, Stand, Sit, and Speak

Customary Cambodian teachings commence at home at a very young age. Our parents place very strict rules, manner and rules for behavior must be taught when babies start to sit or stand. These are training to become good citizen of the society. “The values below capture the essence of a well-mannered Cambodian.”

Sleep

-Wake up before sunrise or you are lazy.
-Sleeping places in the home are determined according to status. (Cambodian families in the rural often live in one or two rooms, and everyone sleeps on the same bed, a large slatted wooden platform about eight- or ten-feet square. The parents sleep at the “head” end and the youngest children sleep at the “foot.”)
