Point!
I use jar “sour bamboo shoot” as shown in the picture. It has strong sour smell, this can change the flavor of the soup. Make sure to boil bamboo shoot once to get rid of sour smell and sodium metabisulfite. After boiling, wash it out a few times and then soak it with cold water for about 10 minutes before putting it into the soup. If you use a fresh bamboo, boil once to get rid of strong acid.

Hi B.S,
Is that right? I am glad you like it. Don’t we have something in common or it’s just Khmer taste?
Can you cook? Does school provide kitchen for students where you are at right now?

Yes, fish is healthy, the fish oil contains high DHA which is good for human brain. Lpoeu has high beta carotene, good for eyes. Trolach has calcium. Trolach is often use to cure fever in our traditional practice.

look good for somlor pro haer. When I was in Cambodia last year I went with my faimlies to dig fresh bamboo and go fishing with them. We made somlor pro haer, it was yummy with a lot of chili. My husband is an American and he thinks we eat good food with everything fresh except Prohok he hated. He loves all khmer food as long as you don’t put prohok in it. You are a real good chef even you don’t work in a restaurant, but you food show that you do take time to make it look so good, and it mush be tasted as good as it look also. Keep up your good work, I will be back to check out more of your food pictures.
Take care and Happy New Year.

Mrs. Tevy,
Good to see you. Thanks for your comments.
Happy new year to you too!
Somlor prohaer is whole hearty soup, plenty of vitamin. Fresh bamboo and fresh fish makes somlor prohaer very authentic! Real Khmer soup. Yes, it goes well with a touch of salt and chilli or salt and fish sauce. I can see you enjoyed the soup with your family. Very nice to eat together. Glad you had fun.
-Most foreigners are not use to strong smell of prohok. I think it takes time for them to get use to it. Like I can never get use to some of their food such as blue cheese…etc. However, making Khmer dish, prohok is adjustable, you can add a small amount of prohok and supplement it with fish sauce, this give it a lighter taste.
-I learned that food is the base of human, like root is the base of tree, you are what you eat. Bad root affects the whole tree. Bad food affect ones health and mental. If we have a choice, choose healthy food, eat fresh. In this sense, I am glad I am Cambodian because Khmer food is always fresh and rich in vitamin.
-As far as recipe, I will just list the ingredients for now. If there’s any question about Khmer food, please leave a message. And if there enough request, we can join the #chatroom.
Best regards,
sko
